Obesity, Fat Loss And Fat Loss Programs

According to a report by Metro.com, Obesity rates climbed at least 90 percent in 17 states from 1995 onwards — gains that have a direct bearing on U.S. health spending, according to a report.

Jeff Levi, the study’s author, emphasized that it will take years to get the obesity epidemic under control. “This is not a national diet that will be over in a couple of months,” he said.

I for one wonder why it took so long for the authorities to notice this epidmic. Fact of the matter is that obesity has been a problem throughout history, with epidemic proportions. Only the reporting was not as good as it is now. But one does not need to conduct a survey to become aware of this epidemic, as the authorities have done. One only needs to take a look around while walking in the streets to notice that a majority of the people are obese.

Perhaps, for the government to make such an announcement it needs rectifiable figures. But the problem has always been there.

I also wonder why it should take years to bring this epidemic under control. For instance, the primary reason for this epidemic is that people love to eat-  they eat not because they need to but because they 'LOVE TO EAT'. And this love is largely for junk food, particularly among people in the the 18-35 age group.

If the conern is to bring this epidemic down, what is needed is an aggressive campaign about the evils of junk food.
Sure you find advertisements for junk food all over the place, buthow many billborads do you see, or TV messages proclaiming the ill-effects of junk food? Very few indeed.

Then, of course, it is also upto the individual to bring the problem under control in his own life. People surely are conscious of the ill-effects of obesity- ill effects which include heart attacks, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and last but not least an ugly body.

Some of them have of course tried to tackle the situation by going on a fat loss program or the other, but then
the fat loss market is another story of scams and fly by night artists.

It's not that all of them are so, but one needs to do a lot of research to find a fat loss programs that work.

In any case going on a formal fat loss program is not the only solution. There are some age old principles that you can follow to burn off excess body fat. These include eating only when hungry, an hour's physical exercise three times a week and abstinence from fatty anf high cholesterol foods like chocolate, cream and meat. And of course sleep. Cutting down on sleep has been proved to drastically cut body weight, although one needs to be careful about overdoing it.

Perhaps instead of whining about obesity the government could launch a campaign to promote these do-it-yourself weight loss methods.
